The growth of agroturismos (boutique countryside hotels), spas and the existence of peaceful inland villas establish Ibiza firmly within the luxury sector, reiterating that Ibiza is on a mission to prove that it can cater, and cater luxuriously well, for the discerning tastes of high-end aficionados in travel. The history of Ibiza is a rich and plentiful one. The Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals and Moors have all been present on the island at one time or another, as well as pirates who also wanted their share of the island's wealth that came from the discovery of salt and ore, which made the island highly covetable. Ibiza was also considered holy, as no animal poisonous to man could survive on its soil. Thus, seafarers carried a handful of earth from the island in a pouch around their neck to ward off bad luck.
